Spengler. The rebirth of a historic commercial shell.

When the Spengler fashion house went out of business, it left an enormous building behind in Münchenstein. The location was good, but it was half-empty and hard to rent because of its design, like a very good suit, but one that needed retailoring before it could once again be worn confidently. The CS Investment Foundation recognised its qualities and commissioned Samuel Gerber to develop a new strategy for the building. This included temporary complete responsibility, leadership and coordination of the development process. As expected, many aspects turned out differently than anticipated. But the end result was impressive.

Rebirth of a rundown apartment building.

The 1974-vintage building with fourteen apartments in Herzogenbuchsee was neglected and had deteriorated into a problem property. Samuel Gerber now pitches the building afresh as something unique. He tailors it to the needs of today's tenants. The desired effect has already been achieved.

Creative building with a 782% inflation rate.

The design for the expansion of a clinic for children suffering from AIDS in Zimbabwe poses not only an architectural challenge: fulfilling the wishes of doctors, land owners, officials and patients is at least as important. It's not just about function and design. Simple solutions are also needed for legal, financial and implementation issues. And all of this in a totally foreign environment. Everything for the sake of good people whom I know well, and my own conscience.
